ICP – caravan

Feb.12, 2012

ICP ORCHESTRA – Caravan, DIW  1001, 33 1/3 rpm, (JAP) 1982

One sided rare 7” , released together with ”Japan Japon” 12” LP

Another japan released musical BOMB…. The legendary ICP orchestra  under chef Mengelberg´s  leadership playing Ellington´s Caravan in a very wonderful and dreamy way… until… until… Peter Brötzmann enters the stage with some WILD blowing that makes hearts and clocks stop. Totally beautiful playing from Brötzmann, absolutely over the top. The greatest story teller of them all, hits again.

Listening to this music makes the world feel like a better place to be.

This piece of vinyl floats up now and then, even without the original 12” LP release – and this is why record collecting is fun, when you find exceptional music like this , packaged like this. Mishas smile (?) and they way he goes for something with his right hand, on the piano(?) , a cigarette (?)… is this photo taken just at that moment when Brötzmann enters? Another mystery….

Ellington, Mengelberg & Brötzmann… a trio hard to beat!

Han Bennink- drums

Joe Maassen – trombone

YOSUKE YAMASHITE – Battle Royal

Feb.10, 2012

YOSUKE YAMASHITA TRIO –Battle Royal (Rikidozan), Columbia AH – 363, 45 rpm (JAP) 197?

Very rare japanese soundtrack on 7” vinyl

A music BOMB! The sensational Yosuke Yamashita Trio. The legendary trio…

With Seiichi Nakamura on piercing tenor sax, Yosuke Yamashita on attack piano and snare drum whirlwind Takeo Moriyama on drums playing the great composition Battle Royal. Explosive music, that is shooting itself out of the membrans of the speakers…. Hilarious! The flip side is something different….there is always two sides to things?

The trio is delivering! And in what a way!!!! A BOMB!!!!

Anyone who has seen the film?

My copy is signed by the pianoplayer while working together in Tokyo in 2009.

A lot can be told about this trio, the only thing that is certain, is that all , ALL, their vinyls are worth getting, period!

Yosue Yamashita – piano

Seiichi Nakamura – tenor sax

Takeo Moriyama – drums

SUN RA – Super Blonde

Feb.10, 2012

SUN RA ARKESTRA – Super Blonde/ Soft Talk, Saturn Z 1111, 45 rpm (USA), 1956

Extremely rare original Saturn 7”. According to my and my fellow discaholics knowledge and existing discographies only 5 copies are known to still exists….

”The mystery” 7” by Le Sun Ra and his Arkestra. Super Blonde is the holy grail for all Ra- collectors. This is the very second 7” that Saturn records released ( we believe that the 7” released as simply “Saturn” is the very first one…. But we only know of one existing copy so far….)  and what a record o start it off with! Music is totally fantastic! With an early incarnation of the Arkestra and a very very jazzy sound and a TOTALLY killin arrangement by Ra, with great contribution by John Gilmore, Pat Patrick, Julian Priester and one of the most amazing jazz drummers ever: Robert Barry! Both A –side and B- side is totally SWINGIN! This item is for sure one of the rarest record you can look for if you are looking for rare free jazz related goodies. There must be more copies somewhere, but they NEVER float up…

The track Super Blonde came out on the 12” Lp SuperSonic Jazz that is a KILLER album by Ra.

There is a long and very exciting story about how this piece of vinyl finally made it to my collection and it might eventually be told one day by the mighty ”Vinyl Freak”, my discaholic brother in Chicago… who naturally has a copy as well of this holy grail.

The music is so good that it hurts… and luckily enough – for non discaholics –  it is available on various sound sources these days.

BUT… the 7” is the one to get, of course…

Sun Ra – piano and arrangement

Art Hoyle – trumpet

John Gilmore – tenor sax

Julian Priester – trombone

Pat Patrick – baritone sax

Jim Herndon – Tympani

Wilburn Green – bass

Robert Barry – drums

THE QUALATIES/ SUN RA – it´s christmas time

Feb.10, 2012

THE QUALATIES – It´s Christmas time, Saturn MOBW 4052, 45 rpm (USA), 1956

Very rare original saturn 7”

This is the x- mas record of all time!!! As a bonus you get also an amazing happy new year song with some unbeleviable bass singing… deeeeeep down!

A Doo –Wop group not known to me but they are backed up by the incredible Sun Ra Arkestra in one of their off-space-jazz- attempts.

The songs are written by Sun Ra and his manager/ label mate Aalton Abraham. Amazing songs! They are TOTALLY staying inside of  you after the first listening.

All the off-space-jazz- attempts made by Ra and produced by Abraham are worth looking for – and some of them are really WILD, some are just beautiful -problem is that very many people these days are looking for them!

Why the ”n” is missing on the recordlabels ”Satur” beats me…

…part of the RA – mystery….

is this the best doo- wop vinyl ever recorded ????

The Qualaties – unidentified male vocal quartet

Sun Ra – harmonium

unidentified guitar

unidentified bells

JOHN COLTRANE – ASCENSION

Feb.07, 2012

JOHN COLTRANE –  ASCENSION, Impule A -95, 33 1/3 rpm (USA), 1965 (edition 1 )

Jukebox edition. With jukebox  stickers and mini photos. Edition ? one ever sold on eBay…

An amazing idea: take Trane´s  storching masterpiece Ascension with its complete form and structure and numerous genius solo activities and edit it down to a 7”….made for jukeboxes (!!!)…. But it was made… I thought for a long time that this Ep did not exist… a myth…just rumours ….

But, it appeared, not only in dreams… and what you get is 8 x 2  minutes of heaven!

Just waiting for the right jukebox to put it into.

Music is of course absolutely mindbending and the cover with Trane sitting and listening (?) is just classic!!!

The solos you get after wild and frantic  ensemble playing is by: Trane, Shepp and Tchicai and a short one by Marion Brown…

(which makes this an excerpt from the edition 1 release!)

notes from the only sell on eBay:

The so-called “LITTLE” (or Juke Box) LPs ARE NOT to be confused for regular 7-inch, 4-track EPs which were widely commercially available. The 7-inch LITTLE LPs were made EXCLUSIVELY for use in Jukebox machines or for other promotional purposes and were usually accompanied by the set of 4- or 6 jukebox labels (usually, but not always, replicating the original cover artwork). The LITTLE LPs were NEVER commercially available in any way, manner or form, and are usually NOT listed as a separate category in the record collecting price books and directories. How in the heavens name could anyone at Impulse even imagine that something like this – the most extremely radical music imaginable – could be played in dance halls and on Jukebox machines is truly mind-boggling and beyond belief. My mind literally ground to a halt when I saw this piece!

John Coltrane – tenor sax

Marion Brown – alto sax

Pharoah Sanders – tenor sax

Archie Shepp – tenor sax

John Tchicai – alto sax

AMM – at the roundhouse

Feb.07, 2012

AMM – live at the Roundhouse – Incus EP1 , 45 rpm, (UK) , 1972

Some 100 copies made (?)

One of the earliest documents on the British Incus label , founded by Derek Bailey, Evan Parker and Tony Oxley. And definately one of the hardest to find. A rare opportunity to hear the AMM duo of Gare and Prevost!

A music with unusual qualities… very searching and balanced… no free jazz excursions… just the AMM connection, but with only two acoustic instrument. a VERY interesting study in music!

B- side is all about colour and minimal energy. Beautiful! and a very early example of what is later during the 2000´s happening in the world of improvised music and minimal improv…

AMM started in mid 60´s together with guitarist Keith Rowe, but this version is quite a spectacular one.

Amazing design, amazing music and check the original logo out, in the lower left corner of the backside!

Lou Gare – tenor sax

Eddie Prevost – drums

CALIGULAS BARN

Feb.07, 2012

CALIGULAS BARN  – Pryl 1, 45 rpm (SWE) 1981

500 pressed, but only 300 survived when rehearsal spece was taken down…

A classic punk single from the amazing Caligulas Barn from Umeå / Holmsund. Hitting it hard… and still , after 30 years, two of the members ( Kollberg and Westin) are still active together in Umeå, in the asskickin The Most!

The beginning of the 80´s was an extremely vibrant time in Umeå with very many active groups experimenting with new forms for music (and politics), both within jazz and rock/ punk.

Years before the HC – scene was hitting Umeå hard with groups like Refused and related.

Caligulas Barm, Anders Ångest and The Sämst were among the most creative and pulverizing combos.

”Askungen” – classic!

Magnus Kollberg . guitar, bass and vocal

Erik Levander –  guitar, bass and vocal

Mats Westin – drums
