Michael Garrick – Anthem

Apr.10, 2012

Michael Garrick Quintet ANTHEM, argo ZFA 92, 45 rpm (UK) 1965

Very rare uk 7”

Another UK jazz gem. The mighty Michael Garrick Quintet in a pretty unusual setting… with an organist and a vocal group “The Elizabethan Singers”….

Free jazz and sacred music… what could go “wrong”?

It is to DC a pretty weird mix… but the playing is so gooooood! Harriott is beaming of energy even if the music is a bit overthetop pretentious perhaps ?

But we can assure you all… anything with Joe Harriott from this period ,mid 60´s, is worth going after.

Very few sax players had the same energy and luminous quality… Harriott was spectacular and this 7” is one of the hardest to find. His whole discography is a very hairy challenge… many of his 7” and 12” releases are made in very small editions and very sought after. His partner Shake Keane is heard playing “sacred” with the organist in a unusual way… but the big thrill here is of course Harriott!

Michael Garrick  – piano

Joe Harriott – alto sax

Shake Keane – trumpet

Coleridge Goode – bass

Colin Barnes – drums

Simon Preston – organ

The Elizabethan Singers – voices

Brion Gysin – Junk

Brion Gysin – Junk, mosquito 8900, 45 rpm (FRA) , 1983

Rare French 7”

The legendary Brion Gysin in a project with Ramuntcho Matta and other French musicians.

Gysin is doing his sloooow reading poetry with a pretty funky background… BUT the big thrill here is of course…. the other legend of this piece of precious vinyl : Don Cherry on pocket trumpet!!!!

Playing beautifully and light… jumping melodically behind the voice of Gysin, creating patterns of poetic beauty!

Don Cherry and Brion Gysin together is nothing else then FANTASTIC!

Ramuntcho Matta – guitar, production

Fil Mong – bass

Abdoulaye Prosper Niang – drums

Art Blakey – Stop driving…

Apr.09, 2012

ART BLAKEY  – stop driving us crazy, GRC 5748, 45 rpm (USA),1959

Very very rare hard bop 7”

We cant really find so much info on this rare beast of jazz, but it does have a very interesting story and background:

Produced by The General Board of Temperance of the Methodist Church in the US as a soundtrack to a traffic safety film (!!!).

This instruction film seems to have its intention to prevent people to actually kill themselves by driving… and the music is supposed to be helping against that general idea. It must help… since the music is first class hard bop — classic Messengers style! But what an idea!

Rusty, a spy from Mars, pays a visit to Earth and discovers how its inhabitants disrespect one another by driving poorly. The film espouses a Christian viewpoint on safety, stating that “reckless driving is a sin.”  The 1950s-style animation is great and quite inventive visually!

Interesting enough if you listen to the whole soundtrack there is a lot of “special effects” made by the Jazz Messengers, in order to illustrate car crashes, marsians (!) and related activities! Even a very short “free” trumpet solo by Morgan…

We cant find this music released in any other format and it’s a KICKIN piece of vinyl – with an amazing cover, that seems to be in a unique size… slightly larger then the normal standard 7” covers.

Benny Golson wrote the two pieces: No Time for Speed, Hard Driving Blues and Art Blakey put a group together of the highest skills and levels: Lee Morgan om trumpet, Jerome Richardson on baritone sax (!), Bobby Timmons on piano and Jymie Merritt on bass plus the drummer himself on the drum stool. It SWINGS and there is amazing soloworks from Lee Morgan and Jerome Richardson.

A Sensational 7” !!!

ARAC – Constellation

Feb.23, 2012

ARAC , Constellation, ARAC BEP- 123, 45 rpm (SWE) 1971

Very very rare swedish jazz, between 100 and 150 copies.

This is a rare one… one of the most uncommon swedish jazz artifacts on vinyl ever. A true Norrland piece of jazz  vinyl. With the totally KILLIN Sten Öberg on drums. HE is a wiz… one of the best hidden secrets of the jazz scene ever. Active since early 60´s… he played with litterally everyone of visiting jazzplayers over the years, Lars Gullin, Stan Getz, Dexter Gordon, Bill Evans etc etc….all the visiting musicians coming up to the cold north to play. He even played with Albert Ayler and Archie Shepp… Sten is the ONE!

This 7” was made in the early 70´s with the Arac group, led by great trombone player Bertil Strandberg. All local musicians. Playing the great titled ”We aint movin” in local swedish: ”Vi flytt int” (a phrase later used by famous donwhill skiier Ingemar Stenmark and Stig Strand….)  and the swinging tune Critic choice.

Souljazz related material with some very nice arrangement and good solos by Strandberg!!!

Bertil Strandberg – trombone

Bengt Lindgren – tenor sax

Göran Strandberg – piano

Lars Gunnar Gunnarsson – bass

Sten Öberg – drums

Very very scarce and rare 7”

The Swinging world of Bo Nilsson presents ”Gorillan går in” (The Gorilla walks in) and ”Gorillan går ut” ( The Gorilla walks out) is a swedish classic. Unfortunately very rare to find.

soundtrack to the film “Träfracken”.

A very special collaboration between the ex Darmstadt composer Bo Nilsson and a bunch of reallly happening jazz musicians, including the mighty Norwegian tenor sax of Bjarne Nerem and the amazing swedish trumpet player Rolf Ericsson (of Ellington and Mingus – fame). The composer is featured on congas…

music is a very groovy funky jazz piece of SWING…(det svänger så att det svartnar…..)

and the cover is just…. freakin excellent!!!

Bo NIlsson made some amazing music in the 50´s and some  spectacular collaborations in the 60´s and 70´s. Most famous being the classic ”Lidingö Airport” that he composed for the mindblowing organ & drum duo Hansson & Carlsson.

ALFRED PANOU – Je suis un sauvage

Feb.14, 2012

ALFRED PANOU – Je suis un sauvage, Saravah, SH 40 01,  45 rpm, (FRA) 1969

Very rare french 7”

Yet another (!) french rare single with free jazz related material… and this one is kickin serious b**t! Dont really know who Alfred Panou is…BUT, we do know that the exceptional combo of Art Ensemble of Chicago is backing him up… what could go wrong with Lester Bowie & co behind you?

This is a BEAST of music! Recorded in the famous Saravah studios oct 14th 1969!!!

Panou is mixing a french spoken word with shouts and noises… backed up by the amazingly groovy AEOC! Favours electric bass is evil! and Lester Bowie and co are in terrific form! this a very very excellent and creative mix of two different (?) traditions.

both a – side and b- side are mindblowing and great examples of AEOC in best possible form! YES!!!!

I never seen another copy of this one.

The cover cant really be misunderstood…. Amazing drawing!

The AEOC in the late 60´s and early 70´s must be one of the most exceptional and most  happening combos in Jazz  History whatsoever… everything is worth having with them from this period. Everything! Go hunting!

There are also some scarce off- recordings with Fontella Bass (former wife of Lester Bowie) from the same period that is very much worth looking for.

Alfred Panou – voice

Lester Bowie – trumpet

Joseph Jarman – reeds and misc instr.

Roscoe Mitchell – reeds and misc instr.

Malachi Favors – bass

KOMEDA – Le Départ

Feb.14, 2012

KOMEDA  – Le Depart, Philips 437376 BE, 45 rpm (FRA) 1967, dec 28th.

Very very rare soundtrack 7”

A Jerzy Skolimiwski film with a kick ass soundtrack… just a super track by the great  polish composer and piano player Krystof Komeda with an insane, totally over-the-top line up of free jazz icons: Don Cherry, Gato Barbiero, J-F Jenny Clark, Jacques  Thollot and others. And YES, the music is as good as you can imagine. This music later came out as a 12” lp in japan with the complete soundtrack. BUT… this is the one to look for. Yet, anoter examply of how many amazing 7” that came out in France during the 60´s and 70´s with really happening free jazz related music. The film is great, the cover is great, the music is great… its all pretty happening…

A- side starts with a french chanson, nicely arranged and comes back as third track as an instrumental piece…and now shit starts flying: Don Cherry taking the lead voice in this moody piece of music…overthetop great trumpet playing (!!!)

Side B starts with classic and hard hitting free jazz led by Komeda at the piano. great track! Barbieri and Cherry playing beautiful unison lines… collective improvisation with muted trumpet and all… Barbieri always there supporting. Great open session with walking slow walking bass ends 1st track on b -side. Ending track is weird little arrangement and totally KICKIN!

K.T. Komeda – composition

Don Cherry – trumpet

Rene Urtreger – piano

Jean – Francois Jenny Clark – bass

Gato Barbieri – tenor sax

Jacques Pelzer – alto sax , flute

SAM BELLO – black x-mas

Feb.14, 2012

SAM BELLO – Black Christmas, AAAA 1004, 45 rpm (FRA) 197?

Rare french 7”

Another mighty x- mas soundtrack! This little x-mas jewel is featuring the one-and-only Archie Shepp!!! And in goooood form… the saxtone is as always just under-your-skin-up-in-yr-face… no one else can produce such sounds from the tenor.

But this is a different enviroment for Shepp…  and I love it!

Hi life afro jazz rhythms and action… sheep is flying on top of it all… a free bird…

B -side is instrumental with Shepp taking off, lots of space for the fire music tenor!

Rare to find piece-of-vinyl…

Sam Bello and his men is making the music swing and with the addition of the image on the front jacket this artifact is just the BEST! No Rudolph… but some of his friends from down south! What more can u wish for?

SHEPP is the MAN!

Sam Bello – vocal and guitar

Ekoko – percussion and vocal

Nlomo “Tiger” Jean Claude – lead guitar and vocals

Raymond Dumbe – bass

CHIC STREETMAN – ode to mafeen

Feb.14, 2012

CHIC STREETMAN – Ode to Mafeen, Saravah SH 40059, 45 rpm (FRA) 1975

Very rare french single

Another obscure french 7” that doesnt pop up that often anywhere.  Great singer and guitar player Streetman playing his thing in the great (!) company of brazilian percussionist Nana Vasconcelos and maestro Steve Lacy !!!

A- side starts with bluesy guitar and singing with lacy in the background making lines of beauty… but for sure this is one of the most obscure Lacy entries ever…

B- side starting in a billiard hall… blues starts up… and a piano comes in…

There is a variety of rare and obscure french singles made in the 60´s and 70 ´s with free jazz icons such as Lacy and members of the Art Ensemble of Chicago that were made and DO exists… but they are very very hard to get. But… worth looking for — I kid you NOT!

Wherever Stephen Lackritz shows up… you need to check it out. Always contributing and adding something with his own very distinctive voice. He was the maestro.

This is definately one of the hardest to get in his dioscography.

check more steve lacy music at an excellent discography;

Chic Streetman – guitar and vocals

ANDERS ÅNGEST

Feb.13, 2012

ANDERS ÅNGEST – ….. 45 rpm (SWE) 1980

Very rare Umeå vinyl single

This is THE classic Punk Album from Norrland…. From Umeå… this 7” was spinning on everyones turntables in the early 80´s up in southern Lapland. With the classic line of –

”Jag tycker du är en fotomodell och ikväll, får du tusen beundrare, aah aah aah aaaahh…. Vad ska jag göra med dem?”  freely translated as ”I think you look like a super model and tonight you will be having a thousand admirers… aah aah aah aaaahh… What shall I do with them?” –  this record became almost a lifestyle…

The mysterious Jan Balzar is making a classic spoken intro that doesnt make any sense now or then…

Anders Ångest was a punk group that was dangerous… consisting of some mean motherf**kers and they were for a short while dominating the scene up in the cold north. Only overtaken by Ebba Grön on a couple of classic visits…

This piece of vinyl is NOT easy to find in any condition any longer…BUT, a recent version of ”Flickan” was recorded by a Free Improv group in Stockholm- MAXCOLIC –  in the 90´s and will see the light of the day on  vinyl in  the near future.

Amilion – bass and vocal

Jan Balzar – voice

Nylle – guitar

Tomas Carneheim – vocals

Larry – drums
