The unholy shriek of baritone saxophone from Mats Gustafsson on “Viking II/Perfection,” the opener from the Thing’s recent Shake (The Thing/Trost), arrives with such a gut punch that it sounds more like a blast of guitar feedback than a reed instrument. Though recorded by Jørgen Traeen, a Norwegian known for his work in pop and electronic music, the album in no way diminishes the Scandinavian trio’s grit and raw power—in fact Traeen seems to have enhanced it, as on the aforementioned thunderous stomp written by drummer Paal Nilssen-Love. While many of the group’s albums are full-on collaborations with musicians such as Joe McPhee, Thurston Moore, or Neneh Cherry, only trumpeter Goran Kajfes and alto saxophonist Anna Högberg join in here, as part of the multilinear chorus on the epic “Aim.” The trio is rounded out by bassist Ingebrigt Håker Flaten, whose deep grooves (on knotty upright or fuzzed-out electric) careen and burst over rutted landscapes, toggling between muscular swing and jackhammer chaos. On Håker Flaten’s “Til Jord Skal du Bli,” sax and bass slip in and out of unison, achieving an elegant expression of fury, while a cover of Loop’s “The Nail Will Burn” sounds more like a Sonics outtake. A treatment of “Sigill” by Wyrd Visions shows a surprisingly tender side, however, with Nilssen-Love offering occasional gong strikes, Håker Flaten luxuriating in a warm, patient ostinato, and Gustafsson blowing quavering lines that seem certain to explode violently but never do. Of course, in a live setting the explosions never stop. — Peter Margasak
