Oförglömlig kväll i skenet av stearinljus

Konsert The Thing & Neneh Cherry Strand, Hornstull

En så världslig sak som strömavbrott stoppade inte den spännande konstellationen av garagefrijazztrion The Thing med saxofonisten Mats Gustafsson och sångerskan Neneh Cherry på Strand i tisdags.

Istället genomförde en oförglömlig konsert i skenet av stearinljus inför en stor och mycket entusiastisk publik. Att Neneh Cherry sjöng utan mikrofon skapade en sällsynt intimitet och ställde stora krav på det vanligtvis skramliga och högljudda The Thing.

Nu blev det en nedtonad men livfull konsert där röst och instrument samsades i en friform-r&b spetsad med inslag av hiphop, riff, suggestiv frijazz och några små ylanden på saxofonen. Det var nästan lite synd att strömmen kom tillbaka i slutet av spelningen.

Att Neneh Cherry trivs är tydligt – och hon står i centrum med sin uttrycksfulla och starka röst och utstrålning. Hon växlar mellan sång, rap och ordlösa improvisationer – dansar och sprudlar av energi och glädje.

Egentligen är det en ganska kort konsert de genomför, tre längre cover-låtar och två extranummer. Men de fyller den med stort musikaliskt innehåll. Den norske basisten Ingebrigt Håker Flaten framträder som en gigant. Han får till ett sväng som trollbinder i en cool version av en hiphoplåt signerad MF Doom. Med trumslagaren Paal Nilssen-Love och Mats Gustafsson skapar han ett tillbakahållet men skitigt riff på To tuff to die av Martina Topley Bird.

När de närmar sig Nico framträder i stället den spirituella jazzen, inte minst när Neneh Cherry citerar ur Archie Shepps Blasé där en gång sångerskan Jeanne Lee förde samman soul, blues och jazz på ett makalöst sätt.

Det är också i jazzen och i ett öppet förhållningssätt man ska söka länken i detta udda par. Neneh Cherry är styvdotter till trumpetaren Don Cherry, samme man som skrivit låten som The Thing tagit namnet från. Då står varken stenhård friform eller hitlåtar som Buffalo stance i vägen.

1st pressing of an amazing LP!!!! great music and amazing cover. Large ensemble compositions and improvisations by this great swedish jazzgroup under Jan Johansson and Georg Riedel.
The back of the cover was “stolen ” by Swedish Azz and their new release “azz appeal” on Not Two Records.
But this is the original.
Included is great composition by Riedel: “Hugin and Munin”.
Hard to find these days and amazing music!!! great shape!
