Penis Gorilla

Apr.27, 2012

PENIS GORILLA – 33 1/3 rpm (JAP) mid 70`s ?

Extremely rare post card  manga 5″ flexi ep

This is a very very very odd one… and extremely hard to find and…. Extremely weird music.

Some kind of percussion/ voice meeting with unclear motif, journey and goal…

We got help  translating the Japanese signs and found out that the musicians on this super amazing card board flexi is: Yosuke Yamashita (!!!) together with Seichi Nakamura, Fumio Watanabe and Yoshijiro (or Ryojiro)  Furusawa — all playing percussion obviously and chanting away.

This item was originally released together with a manga magazine… but we cant find any additional info on this rare beast.

The front image is amazing… and the back of the cardboard is just… mindblowing… with a sitting down gorilla, waiting for something …(?)

Of all records DC have dealt with over the years… this one beats the most!

Yosuke Yamashita – perc, piano and vo

Seichi Nakamura – perc, vo

Fumio Watanabe – perc, vo

Yoshijiro ( Ryojiro?) Furusawa – perc , vo

Rollins 3 / Miles 5 on Bird Notes

Apr.27, 2012

Sonny Rollins Trio / Miles Davis Quintet – Bird Notes BN3/NB4, 45 rpm (SWE) 1962?

Extremely, extremely  rare 7”, between 5 – 10 copies.

A musical bomb in vinyl format! The Swedish producer Bengt Nordström again…

Nordström pressed a bunch of favorite music onto vinyl in the early 60´s.

These two sides were always superfavorite music of his. The music was way later released on Dragon records in LP and CD format , but this is the very original first pressing of this specific music!

Recorded by Bengt himself in front of his radio during the very broadcast from the Nalen  Club and the Stockholm Konserthuset. Hilarious!

Music is of course as good as it gets and the whole concept of making a vinyl, in this way,  of the music back in the early 60´s is quite spectacular! Rollins in absolute TOP form and Stitt stretching ouuuuuut….. with a Miles in great shape! It SWINGS!

This is perhaps the hardest one to get for the Miles and Rollins completists!

No art cover… but a note written by Nordström on a type writer accompanying the vinyl.

DC knows about 3 existing copies… but there is likely a couple more done

Sonny Rollins – tenor sax

Henry Grimes – bass

Pete LaRoca – drums

recorded 1959

Miles Davis – trumpet

Sonny Stitt – tenor sax

Wynton Kelly – piano

Paul Chambers – bass

Jimmy Cobb – drums

recorded 1960

Charlie Parker on Bird Notes

Apr.27, 2012

Charlie Parker solos, Frippe Records, 45 rpm (SWE) released 1960?

Extremely extremely rare 7”, between 5 – 10 copies

Another Bengt Nordström production… and again … a WILD one….with music of the HIGHEST quality of course! Nothing else mattered for Nordström.

Simple the 3 most killin Bird solos that Bengt knew. His all time favorite Charlie Parker solos. And what a collection… this IS simply some of the most amazing solos by Bird, no question!

This vinyl in 7” format was probably made even before Bengt started his Bird Notes imprint. So,  likely in the end of the 50´s or the very early 60´s ?

Recorded on his moveable recording unit at his home in Stockholm, simply recording the sound of his stereo speakers, while playing the vinyl of Bird,  with one microphone and later going to the EuropaFilm studios in Solna to make a bunch of private copies for himself and as give –away to friends and collegues.

The Bird Note / B.R.A / Frippe records discography is a WILD one… and very very collectible… but extremely hard to find any records these days… they simply doesn’t float around too much..especially the 7”´s …

A complete discography is being worked on by DC/ Olof Bright Editions in collaboration with Andra Jazz and private collectors in Stockholm… more info about this, will be posted on DC later.

Note the handwritten labels by Nordström, with adjustments by Harald Hult  (?) of Andra jazz – fame.

Wade Legge – piano

Lou Hackney – bass

Jazz Jamboree 1967 vol 2

Apr.11, 2012

JAZZ JAMBOREE 1967 vol 2, Muza 33 1/3 rpm (POL) 1967

Rare polish LP

A BOMB! A jazz bomb…

Because…. this line up of this Manfred Schoof Quintet is nothing else then a sensation!

The record cover does not give any information other then “Manfred Schoof Quintet, West Germany, playing Oleo by Sonny Rollins”.

Discussing this  1967 tour of the Manfred Schoof Quinet with Mr Parker gave us some sensational information regarding the line up… Schoof, Evan Parker, Schlippenbach, Niebergall and Bennink!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And the music IS a bomb! Oleo is treated with respect, creativity and FIRE! The energy is wild and the solo works by Parker, Schoof and Schlippenbach is nothing else then a sensation. And Bennink is on fire… This is JAZZ. This is WILD JAZZ. This is FREE JAZZ.

A very interesting historical document as well, regarding that this music was recorded already in 1967, when the collaborations between the free scenes in Germany and England, as well as Holland , only just had started. Globe Unity had just started its activity and Machine Gun by Peter Brötzmann was yet to be recorded.

This record is actually not extremely hard to find, since the information of the line up has been well hidden… this is something for all you Parker and Bennink completists out there! A record to be sought after…

Evan Parker has some Archie Shepp DNA it seems and the Ayler quotes before the wild drum solo by Bennink is astonishing…. Wild!!!!

Manfred Schoof – trumpet

Evan Parker – tenor sax

Alex von Schlippenbach – piano

Buschi Niebergall – bass

Han Bennink – drums

Guido Manusardi – Romanian Impressions

Apr.11, 2012

GUIDO MANUSARDI QUARTET – ROMANIAN IMPRESSIONS, Amigo AMLP 814, 33 1/3 rpm (SWE), 1974

Unique alternative mock up cover of classic Swedish jazz lp. Test pressing.

This is an amazing classic Swedish jazz lp from 1974 with Lennart Åberg in top form!

The unique thing with this particular copy is that it has a totally different and alternative cover. Which is pretty rockin! With hand lettered information and even an incorrectly spelled title of the album: “Roumanian Impressions”.

Always interesting to see how labels, musicians and artist are preparing and trying various cover ideas and such for a release and this one is a good example.

The music is a great example of the different influences that various ethnic music had on Swedish jazz during this period. Many musicians from the eastern part of Europe came to live in Sweden in the 60´s and 70´s, a.o. Okay Temiz and Maffy Falay. There was also a very strong connection to African music though the influence of Don Cherry (that was living in a country house in Tågarp, Skåne) early on with his Swedish family. Furthermore there was a strong South African input with musicians like Gilbert Matthews and Johnny Dyani living in Stockholm at the time… and many many more examples of amazing musicians visiting the land in the north and effecting its jazzhistory quite a bit!

Many Swedish jazz groups in the 60´s and 70´s were incorporating these influences in very creative ways, for instance Bernt Rosengren, Bengt Ernryd, Janne Wallgren and later Rena Rama (with Lennart Åberg and Bobo Stenson) and also Opposite Corner with Gunnar Lindgren as well as the freer improvising of the great collective Iskra.

The whole musician collective of “Ett Minne för livet” with its connections to the prog /psych part of the rock scene in Sweden were also heavily dealing with these influences.

We don’t have any info on why´s and how´s  regarding the rejection of this cover version – but we wanted to show this amazing album in a different visual context.

Lennart Åberg is taking the music to same very creative areas.. his soprano sax skills are ACE! We wanna hear more of Mr Åberg!

This is the cover as it later came out:

Guido Manusardi – piano

Lennart Åberg – tenor and soprano sax

Red Mitchell – bass

Peter Östlund – drums

DC rank this alternative mock up cover/ test pressing as:

Willy Lundin – Interpop

Apr.11, 2012

Willy Lundin – Interpop, Record material 4059, 33 rpm (SWE), mid 60´s

Rare promi flexi

This is an odd Swedish flexi… wow! Made to promote great sax player Willy Lundin´s new group “Interpop” – an attempt to make success with the 60´s pop sound…

Two “actors” talking in Swedish about Willy Lundin and his way of making music and how great Interpop is and in how many different styles they can play in!!! Various music examples illustrates what the “actors” are talking about and how “GREAT” this new project of Lundin is.

The new sound of Willy Lundin with B3 organ and echochamber and all is pretty rockin

Part of the material is actually pretty great, funky soul jazz…. But the attempts to make a swingin “bossa” , a “tango” and a “cha- cha” can be left aside…

Lundin was a truly great jazz alto and tenor sax player and we don’t really know how this Interpop project of his succeeded back in the days….this new way of presenting his music and his band was sponsored by the “Artistförmedlingen I Göteborg” (The artist agency in Gothenburg” with telephone number and all.

Lundin played with drummer Kenneth Fagerlund quite a bit and also with great Swedish piano player Jan Johansson. From time to time Lundin was also playing on his accordeon in various jazz settings.

This odd flexi in its beautiful picture cover is one of the hardest records to find if you wanna have your Swedish jazz discography complete… good luck!!!

he: ” …a band that is so deadly great (“dödsbra”) must be coming back and play again”

she: ” Mmmmmmmmh,  I hope so, I hope so!”

Willy Lundin – alto and tenor sax

Unknown instrumental quartet with organ, trombone/ trumpet, bass and drums.

“she” – Jaenette Axvi – voice

“he” – Jan Cederquist – voice

Bunk Johnson – talking

Apr.10, 2012

BUNK JOHNSON – THIS IS BUNK JOHNSON TALKING, American Music LP 643, 33 1/3 rpm, (USA), 1942

Rare red colored  10”vinyl

This is a spectacular vinyl. Musically. Historically.

We would like to say that this piece of vinyl is as close as you can possible get to the birth of jazz!!! Nothing else then a sensation!

Bunk Johnson, the great New Orleans trumpeter, that was ”found” after years in absence… is recorded at a little studio on Baronne Street, talking about those early years of jazz in New Orleans. Johnson is describing the time, the culture and its people and how the Jazz was actually born.

Having actually played with the legendary Buddy Bolden… Johnson is on this recording describing Boldens way of playing, the way he was phrasing…as ”makin runs”… and actually whistling (!) a whole piece in order to exemplify what he is describing.

This is complety breathtaking. You can actually understand what Johnson is talking about and this might be the only approximate example of how Bolden actually played.

There exists no recordings of Bolden what so ever. This is as close as we can get.

Goose bumbs and cold sweat dominates you… while listening to this historical document.

The music and the talks is rereleased… BUT, this is the very original pressing on red wax… made by the local Chicago label American Music. All Johnson records on American Music is worth having (and yes, they are all red, the 1st pressings), but this one, which seems to be the rarest and most uncommon is the BOMB!

The whistling of Johnson swings like mad. Like MAD! You can only smile and sit back and relax listening to this beautiful  red 10” vinyl.

Bunk also shows how, when he joined the band in 1895, he added a variety by introducing diminished chords during his cornet breaks… and the story goes on…

What is really true here, we don’t know, but we know for sure that this vinyl is a spectacular chance to get closer to core of the question… when jazz was born… what it really was….

Bunk Johnson: “Now here is the list about that Jazz Playing. King Bolden and myself were the first men that began playing Jazz in the city of dear old New Orleans and his band had the whole of New Orleans Real Crazy and Running Wild behind it. Now that was all you could hear in New Orleans, that King Bolden’s Band, and I was with him and that was between 1895 and 1896 and they did not have any dixie land Jazz Band in those days.”

This is the classic debut album by PJ Harvey. Hard, free and full of rock poetry.

This 2 LP set came out in a limited run, long gone…

The second LP includes the raw 4 track demos made for the original record.

RAW and INTENSE – the demo versions has a very very  direct  – up-in- yr – face character, like no other recordings made on the Indie –scene.

The naked character, the intense texts and Polly´s piercing voice makes this album a very very special one. A musical BOMB!

To us, the energy reminds only about the best work of free jazz legends Ayler, Coltrane and Taylor.

A sensation when it first came and still a classic , no matter what genre is up yr alley.
