Howard Riley – FLIGHT on turtle!!!

this is a classic… a CLASSIC masterpiece of improvised music and jazz.

not much to say… it is very rare these days and the music is overthetop  amazing! Riley, Oxley and Guy… it doesnt get better then this. amazing interaction and just a BOMB overall!!!!

Sven Hessle – private press SH 001

a SENSATION here…. nothing else…. pressed in 50 copies only!!!!…. more information about this BEAST will be post later in the archive / recommendation section.

no art cover, plain white…..+ there is a sheet of paper, that was photocopied for this amazing realease with the BEST of the BEST in swedish free jazz…. a photocopy of this paper can be provided.

it looks like this:

the condition of the vinyl is ok… but has quite a lot of surface noise…no skips…. I have seen a couple copies during the years…. none is perfect…( pressing problems ?) I would grade the vinyl G/ G+

at some places the surface noise is clearly audible… during bass solos…

but , the extreme rarity and the MUSIC on this baby…. needs us to post it as a TRADE! you will NEVER see this one again.

side A — first session is recorded in jan 1967 with kick ass altoist Christer Boustedt, Janne Carlsson ( of Hansson & Carlsson – fame ), bassist Gösta Wälivaara and singer Torbjörn Munthe – Sandberg singing a greek rhapsody (!!!! )

it is TRULY like nothing else we have ever ever heard before!

side B — second session is from june 1968 , classic free jazz blow out with Gilbert Holmström ( of Mount Everest – fame), Åke Johansson on piano and anders söderling on drums.

Sven Hessle is playing his bass throughtout the whole session… beautiful!

monster improv session with 2 of the masters of free improvisation. Barry Guy on double bass and Evan Parker on reeds…. wild and beautiful and very well recorded.

recorded in 1985, this beautiful piece of vinyl hardly ever shows up these days, pressed in only a few hundred copies. fantastic interaction and also a great cover!

Hacke Björksten & Åke Persson Quintet – metronome mep 353, 7″

classic swedish jazz from the 50´s…  amazing interplay between Björksten and Persson. hypnotic!

Björksten ( also called Woody Birch) is playing with a warm tone and amazing melodic sense, perfectly backed by the others in this 1956 session.

classic.. another classic….. wow… pianist and band leader Lindberg ( of sax appeal – fame!) — hitting the jazz hard with an swedish all star line up of a.o. Åke Persson – trombone, Maffy Falay – trumpet and the completely GREAT Allan Lundström on tenor sax!!! Lundströms playing alone is just BEAUTIFUL. adventerous and full of melodic beauty! great solos all along and really smoooooth arrangements, that makes u wanna more and more…

Putte Wickman – jöns 6008, 7″ vinyl (SWE)

a very interesting swedish jazz ep… with one of the first appearances of trombone genius Eje Thelin.

This might be, according to DC, the best and most creative Putte Wickman vinyl. All the members are playing amazing and the great arrangements are made by Thelin himself. Harry Bäcklund is a real hidden Swedish secret – absolutely mindblowing tenor playing…. melodic poetic beuty! A rare to find treasure on the obscure Jöns label.

Monica Zetterlund – en valsmelodi, philips 433 452, 7″, (SWE)

A very nice EP by the greatest  scandinavian singer, all time: Monica Z. The Orchestra is led by the great trumpeter and arranger Bengt Arne Wallin. Super sweet melodies and the voice is just as wonderful as always… not the rarest of Z´s vinyls…. but one of the most charming one!!!

 

 

 

 

Andrew Hill – after dark / Down Pat – Ping 1003 , 7″, (USA)

a bomb…. when did u see this one last time?

this is what we write about this jewel of early chicago free jazz history:

 

A magnificent piece of vinyl. A true treasure.  Recorded october 1956. A very young Andrew Hill playing with local Chicago musicians… legends to be, all of them. On a tiny tiny doo- wop label in Chicago! There are other releases on the Ping label that includes Hill backing up different vocal groups. But this is the one to go look for.

Two fantastic sides were cut, both with the Art Ensemble of Chicago bass player Malachi Favors rockin his bass in a steady beat and with great drummer Wilbur Campbell swingin like mad. Andrew Hill is playing organ on one track, in a fantastic way, that makes us wish he would have been doing that a bit more during his long career as one of the main renewer of contemporary jazz!

Side A features the permanent Arkestra member Pat Patrick in one of rare performances outside the Arkestra. Patrick is handling his Bari axe as very few had done at this period in jazz. ”Down Pat” is a stunning piece with swing, heat and some very creative soling! Also a great introcuctionary solo by Von Freeman here! a freakin fantastic tenor solo, way ahead of its time actually..

Side B features Chicago´s own Von Freeman, of New Apartment Lounge – fame. This is a very early recording of Freeman, but you can hear all the typical signatures; the chicago tone, the delicate but still advanced phrasing and an inventive melodic journey over all! fantastic!

Very few copies exists of this extremely rare 7” and they are usually pretty beaten up. This is understandable… people have been playing this record repetedely, since it is so GOOOOD! A very interesting example of early (re)search of musical freedom in the Windy City of Chicago, where both Sun Ra Arkestra and AACM had their headquarters, building up the Jazz to come.

Inga Brandenburg – Herzlichst, Inge , decca DX 2145 , 7″ (GER)

one of the most interesting and creative singers in Europa: Inga Brandenburg. In a session with the GREAT bari sax player Helmut Brandt! recorded in 1960, this is a must have for all jazz vocal fans! very rare 7″… but worth looking for. great arrangements and great soloing as well.

record and cover is n great shape.

Jazz jamboree – 66, Muza XL 0342, LP  (POL)

this is a sensation… music is mindblowing and extremely interesting from historical and musical points of view!

One of the earliest recorded outputs of Jan Garbarek!!! In a duo with the late and great Swedish bass player Kurt Lindgren ( of Cecil Taylor Unit fame!) — the music is something else – a great communication between the two in a unique duo setting. The back side of this rare vinyl is a spectacular duo with Lindgren and piano legend Mal Waldron… also just a great example of extreme jazz interaction!

These duos are followed by an amazing quartet w Lindgren and a young Jan hammer playing with the old violin maestro Stuff Smith! Spectacular!

Brother to Brother feat. Joe McPhee , Yoke Free YF – 1 , LP (USA)

the McPhee bomb….

we had this LP offered in the past… hell broked loose… since this Lp literally doesn´t exists. in no discographies of McPhee… and it was made on demand… in an extremly limited run. The LP was only seen locally, since you had to order it from the producer, at site.

Recorded by Craig Johnson, of CJR – fame ( records with Mcphee – nation time, underground railroad etc etc ) and with a very unusual setting for McPhee.. playing recorder with an unknown electric piano player… in this amazing, totally wonderful Play…. with some outer space contributions from the local chicken farm… readings, music, chickens and a variety of recorded sounds… this is a WEIRD one! and totally beautiful!!! cover is amazing… and the music is even more then that!

still with shrink wrap… but the first track has a one minute light crackling… from a pressing error… believed to be on all copies. after the firts minute , the vinyl is basically mint… never played.

Berndt Egerbladh – Nybyggarland , Sonet 2543, LP, (SWE)

a 1973 recording with late and great swedish piano player and composer Berndt Egerbladh!

His trio record Schizo , might be the most sought after ( and it IS fantastic trio music!!!!) — but this one is an odd one… music is borrowed and taken from Egerbladhs home ground Norrland! traditional fold music transposed into modern jazz with soem great contributions by Bertil Strandberg on trombone and the mighty Sten Öberg on the drums!!!

a japanese bomb… this time the great drummer sabu toyozumi in , what is considered by many including DC, the best vinyl of his. Muisc is complety HAPPENING!

Great and creative free jazz recorded 1976 with dedicated pieces to Eric Dolphy and Kauro Abe a.o.

ripping saxes and hard hitting trombone action all engineered by the free floating drumming by maestro Sabu!!!

the “raga of black key” is as hard hitting as free jazz gets — a complete KILLER tune!

a highly sought after free jazz lp and one of the hardest in sabu´s discography!

Günter Christmann -..off… , Moers Muisc 01070, LP  (GER)

monster record by maestro Christmann. this one beats the MOST! This Lp is a very particular one in the persistent Christmann discography, with mostly very particular solo and ensemble activity…. this monster disc features Herr Christmann on a various amount of instruments… double bass, trombone, spoken word, crackle box, radio, typewriter…. you name it! and teh music is astonashing! a masterpiece of experimental music!

an all time favourite of DC´s !!!

A rare 2 lp set… with one track by an odd group of Peter´s. a Quartet with britsih piano player Keith Tippett, vocalist Julie Tippett, Willi Kellers and long time Brötzmann collaborator Johannes Bauer on trombone.

music is wild and going all directions at the same time until peter shows clearly what direction is the one to take! and odd one… but beautiful and killin!

the rest of this album is a variety of  music, incl a great track by Shannon Jackson´s decoding society and a variety of eastern europe free jazz and even a swedish  group trying their wings: Wail.

this is Swedish jazz history… two of the greatest jazz anarchists, instrumentalists, improvisers, jazz – actors and human beings…. werner & boustedt in a very close discussion… playing duo with piano and various keyboard instruments and alto sax + bass sax… examing be – bop and related matters in a very free and loving way.

this is music to LOVE!

the 2nd dragon record that  came out and a CLASSIC one! amazingh interaction and amazingly FUN!!!

Yuji Takahashi & masahiko Sato- samarkand, denon 7111, LP (JAP)

an amazing study in improvisation…. one acoustic side : samarkand ….and one electronic side :Taklamakan – Lob Nor… and what a study!!! the duo is beaming of curiousness and energy!

takahashi ( of cage fame…) and sato is really taking it far away! one of our all time fav japanese experimental records. recorded  in 1974. the a – side on two grand steinways and the b- side on prepared piano, EMS, AKS, Mini Moog, Mini Korg and Rhodes….. totally KILLING music!!!

this is the 1983 denon pressing. 2 nd press of a classic free jazz / experimental monster!

Jazz Jamboree, vol 2 – 67 , muza 0444, LP (POL)

here it is again… the BOMB! i cant tell you how checked we were when we found out WHO is actually playing on the beast… therefor , DC buys every copy of this LP when we have a chance… and put it here for trade….

A BOMB! A jazz bomb…

Because…. this line up of this Manfred Schoof Quintet is nothing else then a sensation!

The record cover does not give any information other then “Manfred Schoof Quintet, West Germany, playing Oleo by Sonny Rollins”.

Discussing this  1967 tour of the Manfred Schoof Quinet with Mr Parker gave us some sensational information regarding the line up… Schoof, Evan Parker, Schlippenbach, Niebergall and Bennink!!!!!!!!!!!!!

 

And the music IS a bomb! Oleo is treated with respect, creativity and FIRE! The energy is wild and the solo works by Parker, Schoof and Schlippenbach is nothing else then a sensation. And Bennink is on fire… This is JAZZ. This is WILD JAZZ. This is FREE JAZZ.

A very interesting historical document as well, regarding that this music was recorded already in 1967, when the collaborations between the free scenes in Germany and England, as well as Holland , only just had started. Globe Unity had just started its activity and Machine Gun by Peter Brötzmann was yet to be recorded.

This record is actually not extremely hard to find, since the information of the line up has been well hidden… this is something for all you Parker and Bennink completists out there! A record to be sought after…

Evan Parker has some Archie Shepp DNA it seems and the Ayler quotes before the wild drum solo by Bennink is astonishing…. Wild!!!!

her solo violin record is among the best recorded free improvised works EVER! and this duo with Chadbourne is up to that standard. NO DOUBT!

Franz Koglmann w steve lacy, bill doxon…  pipe  152, (AUT)

once again,..  a bomb….. a bomb….we managed to find another unique copy of this very rare lp, with handmade cover and signed by Koglmann…. complete with book and all….

we cant tell you how great this one is… and how rare…

500 copies were made… but this one almost never floats…

Ultra rare self-released LP by Franz Koglmann on his own Pipe label. Edition of only 500 copies – each with a unique handpainted cover. This is signed by Koglmann on the back cover. Features guests Bill Dixon and Alan Silva on side A (Dixon composes the side long piece entitled “For Franz”, while side B features Steve Lacy. This copy is in pristine condition – like new. Top copy of a top notch free jazz rarity. 

A short history of this record
Brass player and composer Franz Koglmann would eventually be courted by a top-notch jazz company funded by a Swiss bank, then become A&R director for Between the Lines, a German label also funded by a bank. But back when he put out this album by himself, there were no banks to back him up and everything was done by hand, literally. Lucky fans who can scramble up a copy of the original vinyl pressing will be the proud owners of a totally handmade piece of work, the paper collage design glued and stamped on the front cover and the liner notes literally written individually on each copy in magic marker. And there were lots of notes to write as well, because the album collects pieces from three different sessions, with three different ensembles. The centerpiece of the album is the lengthy collaboration with Bill Dixon. It was Koglmann’s second recorded collaboration with a major jazz figure, but Dixon is a totally different kind of animal than Koglmann’s previous guest star, Steve Lacy. Dixon’s legendary uptightness when doing projects such as this creates an inhibited feeling that no one is able to shake, and the solo passages of Koglmann’s were apparently written out by Dixon, who didn’t want another trumpet player improvising on the session with him. For an earlier session, recorded in Paris, Lacy is back on board and for the final track the fantastic electronics player Gerd Geier is on board, although with slightly less anarchistic effect than on his previous album with Koglmann, Flaps.

this is the BOMB…. one of the rarest records I have ever came across….. and I found my personal copy the same week as this one…. it took me 15 years to dig one up….

it has everything; rarity, great cover, AMAZING music…. everything….

I cant recommend a record more highly… animal sounds…. and basically just Evan Parker and derek Bailey playing their asses off…. unbelievably GREAT!!!!!!

I have seen one copy for sale ever…. and it was EXPENSIVE….u  can buy a car or two for the price I saw….

cover is VG + with some ring wear and edge….. vinyl has some surface noise at beginning of side A… but is very good  (NM)after that beginning…

this is IT! classic masterpiece of a record! GOTTA HAVE vinyl….. one of the most thrilling and amazing documents of the early european scene….w a line up Bailey, Parker, Wheeler, Rutherford and Clyne together w tony Oxley….this 1970 recording is THE perfect illustration of the breaking point between free jazz and abstract playing…

this is the BOMB…. one of the rarest records I have ever came across….. and I found my personal copy the same week as this one…. it took me 15 years to dig one up….

it has everything; rarity, great cover, AMAZING music…. everything….

I cant recommend a record more highly… animal sounds…. and basically just Evan Parker and derek Bailey playing their asses off…. unbelievably GREAT!!!!!!

I have seen one copy for sale ever…. and it was EXPENSIVE….u  can buy a car or two for the price I saw….

cover is VG + with some ring wear and edge….. vinyl has some surface noise at beginning of side A… but is very good  (NM)after that beginning…

please , only serious offers… and as soon as you can…. this one will go fast….

a KILLER!!! the first recording of Barry Guy!!! an amazing session musically… totally fantastic music! Jon Hiseman on drums, beating the shit outa the heads. originally made in the UK in 99 copies, this is teh japanese 2nd pressing… I  believe in the same amount… 99 copies… rare is just the first name.

Is this the best Howard Riley record ever ??? its possible…. KILLIN!!!!

funny enough this one comes with two covers… beautiful  black and beautiful white( as the original)

rarity and extremely GREAT music — the perfect mix! highly highly recommended. in Mint condition.’

a great document of belgian free music… really KILLIN! and a rare LP to come over these days. Van hove being one of the true masters of free music in Europe, this is one of his strongest records ever! / STILL AVAILABLE!!!

Bengt “Frippe” Nordström – Now is the Frippe time / dragon ( swe)

One of the most amazing voices of European free music ever… one of the best hidden secrets of the scene as well. most known for being the producer of Albert Aylers first recording on his own imprint Bird Notes in 1962. Bengt was also an extremely personal saxplayer… making solo recordings already in 1962 of free improvised music… waaaaaaaay before braxton and others. These recordings u can only find on the extremley sought after and rare  pressings on Bird Notes in quantities between only 5 copies and up to 100 copies. These records hardly shows up at anytime… only perhaps on this site.. look out for that in the future!!!

This Lp is made in the 80´s on the classic Dragon label and is the only commercial release outside the Bird Notes that is existing with Bengt. Some early ( and late ) music of bengt was later  released on Cd by Blue Tower Recordings and Ayler records.

amazing music on saxes and contrabass clarinet , accompanied by his own group Miljlvårdsverket. Not the rarest… but mighty mighty GOOOOOOD!!!!! – STILL AVAILABLE!

One of the greatest pianist ever on this planet… Per Henrik Wallin is the SHIT!!! this is my favourite solo LP of his. all his music is worth checking out… mindblowing treatments of the jazz history, they way Per Henrik saw and heard it.
